R&D Overview

The European R&D Division

Allergan's global R&D team is focused on identifying and developing innovative products for meeting unmet or under-served patient and customer needs. New product concepts emanate from the company's own discovery research projects or through collaboration / in-licensing from an extensive range of industrial, academic and clinical partners. The goals of collaboration / in-licensing partnerships can be either to access specific technologies, such as high-throughput screening and genomics, or to ensure that Allergan's own discoveries are developed and commercialised for applications outside the company's direct areas of interest.

Approaching 1,000 in-house staff are deployed in R&D, of whom about 175 work in Europe. The European R&D division is, in fact, mainly concerned with 'D' — ie development — activities. It starts with pharmaceutical sciences (such as formulation) and clinical development, and moves forward into health economics, regulatory affairs, clinical services, pharmacovigilance and medical affairs. Staff are based in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, as well as in the UK.
